5 MORE Reasons Why You Should Buy a Custom Made Knife!
- You can own something unique
The mobile device you’re watching this on isn’t unique. The car you drive isn’t unique. The TV you watch sports with isn’t unique. All of these things are produced en masse by faceless corporations whose only concern is making their stock tick up a ¼ of a point. We’re all guilty of this, as we really have no choice as far as consumer electronics are concerned. I mean name one phone manufacturer in America that makes phones to order. Go ahead, I’ll wait. But with knives, we absolutely have a choice to own something unique.
A viewer I’ve never met before contacted me after he saw my SOG Instinct Mini review. He said that knife sucks (and boy does it) and he could make something way better (and boy did he). He said he could make something one of a kind. That he would make it from scratch So, I took him up on his offer. I now own a knife that doesn’t exist anywhere else on Earth. I can’t say the same for my treasured ZT 0350. It’s incredibly common, and I love it. But guess which knife I will keep with me until the day I die. “The Urban”, by Alien Knives.
- You can get exactly what you want
These days it can be a challenge getting what you want. How many times have you looked a knife and thought “man if only both sides of the knife were titanium instead of titanium on one side and carbon fiber on the other”. Sometimes you get lucky and a friend will point out that they do in fact make one with both sides titanium, and it’s on eBay. But then you lose the auction because you have a hard time paying more than $70 for D2. Thanks for that btw big bore. I know I’m not the only one who has thought “man only if..”
Well, now you can decide. You’re now in control. You’re in the driver’s seat. You can pick the color, the steel, the handle material, the locking mechanism, the pocket clip, the bearings, etc, etc. It’s your time baby, and it’s you who is the guest of honor at this event. You’re the VIP, the BMOC, the Big Mamoo. You’re the bride to be on your special day, and you get to have your day your way.
- You can see it being made
A part of this stems from point three. In that you get to see it being made, and if questions come up about something you can make a decision that will affect this thing you will have for the rest of your life. That’s a pretty powerful feeling.
I was lucky enough to work with Louis, and be a part of his process. He kept me in the loop with text updates and photos of the progress via his Instagram. I will add his details in the description below. I got to see this thing, turn from a sketch on paper, to a sketch on metal, to a full-fledged knife. It was so cool being able to follow along with it. I know not all knife makers do this, but if they don’t they absolutely should as it makes the customer feel like a special snowflake. Like they are a part of the process. But It also benefits the knifemaker as well, because you just know we’re gonna brag to all of our friends in real life and social media about how we’re having a custom knife made. Like “ya dawg, that’s just how I live. Nothing touches this pocket but pure custom!” A total lie, but hey we’re dudes! It’s part of the game.
- You are supporting small businesses.
Not to get all Christy, and self-righteous about this, but this is my favorite part of owning a custom knife. I love knowing that I know the guy who made this knife and that he is trying to change his life for the better. I love knowing that this father is doing whatever it takes to leave a better life behind for his family, even if that means working 60+ hours a week. I love knowing that my money is helping someone to achieve their dream of escaping the rat race. Helping to encourage someone to keep going, possibly on a day when they needed it most. I love knowing that the money went a fellow American. A fellow patriot. And you know what, this leads us right into point number 5.
- It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.
I will admit, when I was first talking to Luis I was excited at the prospect of having a knife made, but in the back of my mind I was like “fuck, this is gonna be like 3 or 4 hundred bucks I just know it”. Turns out, it was only $100! For a custom made knife, (and he didn’t actually say this lol) but it’s named after me! At least that’s what I’ve been telling my friends. Part of the game right!
For $100, I had a knife made that I will treasure more than my ZT 0350, unquestionably so. I will assume some of you guys have custom knives. You guys are grizzled knife vets. So I’m basically just preaching to the choir at this point with you. But for those of you who haven’t had one made, I cannot recommend it enough. I make it a point to never recommend something I wouldn’t use myself. I’ve got a box full of “maybes” that never made it to the video editing chopping block because I couldn’t in good conscience recommend them. This custom knife though? This is a winner. This is a no question 3 point for the championship win by the great Kobe Bryant, an absolute winner.
This is an incredible knife made by Luis Davo at AlienKnives.com!
